The knowledge about the weirdness of watches

1. Why are some watches with crowns on the left
Most modern mechanical watch designs are accustomed to having the crown on the right side of the case, but you must have seen some watches with the crown on the left. Are these watches specifically designed for left-handed people? Obviously not. The watch with the crown design on the left appeared in the middle of the last century, and this watch was specially designed for divers. Since the left hand of the diver is accustomed to winding various important instruments, such as the compass, depth gauge, etc., the watch used to calculate the diving time is worn on the right hand, and the crown is designed on the left mainly to facilitate the divers to adjust the time.

2. Why do the hands always rotate clockwise?
This is related to the rotation direction of the earth, and the design of the clock refers to the shadow of the sundial. The person who invented the clock lives in the northern hemisphere, so the clock rotates clockwise. On the other hand, the watch industry first developed in the northern hemisphere, and manufacturers found that it was more labor-saving to rotate the rotating body in a "clockwise" direction.
3. How many laps does the manual winding need to be fully wound?
Generally speaking, for a watch with a power reserve of 48 hours, the number of winding turns is between 20 and 30. Other power reserves can basically be calculated according to this ratio, but it is not absolute; when the crown turns close to the upper limit, pay attention to If you feel a little tight in your hand, and the rotation of the crown is not as smooth as before, you can stop it; for the sake of the life of the watch, it should not be 100% wound every time, and it is better to leave some leeway.

4. What is the difference between an annual calendar watch and a perpetual calendar watch?
The annual calendar watch includes the date, week and month display, which is the same as the full calendar watch in appearance. It can identify the 30th month and the 31st month, but its problem is that it cannot identify the number of days in the average month (28th, 29th), so it only needs to be manually adjusted once a year (the end of February).
The functions of perpetual calendar watches include hours, minutes, seconds, date, week, month, year, normal year/leap year indication, and some have moon phases that are more decorative than practical. The reason why it is called a perpetual calendar is that when the watchmaker is designing the movement, he uses all his efforts in the gears, so it can distinguish all ordinary years/leap years by itself (that is, whether it will go 28 days or 29 days in February), and distinguish the size of the month (30 days in a month or 31 days). In short, as long as there is no accidental damage, you don’t need to adjust the watch as long as it is guaranteed to be well-wound.Of course, general perpetual calendars are expensive.
